Pope beatifies Mons. Escrivá and Sr Josephine in St Peter's Square "By our own Apostolic Authority, we decree that the Venerable Servants of God, Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer, priest and founder of Opus Dei, and Josephine Bakhita, vwgin, Daughter of Charity, Canossian, from now on be called Blessed.... In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit". With these solemn words Pope John Paul II beatified Mons. Josemana Escrivá de Balaguer and Sister Josephine Bakhits in St Peter's Square on Sunday, 17 May. As the crowd of 300,000 acclaimed the Holy Father's proclamation by chanting a tiíple Amen, pictures of the two Blesseds were unveiled, one showing Blessed Josephine, gathering around her the children who loved her so well during her earthly life, the other displaying a well-known photograph of the founder of Opus Dei, showing the look of love and devotion which has inspired tens of thousands of his followers on every continent. St Peter's Square was filled to capacity as was Pius XII Square, with the crowd extending halfway down Via della Conciliazione, along Via Paolo VI, and spilling out into the side streets. Remote speakers and closed-circuit television screens enabled the distant worshippers to participate fully in the sacred rites. Among the many concelebrants were Cardinal Camillo Ruirei, Vicar for Rome, Cardinal Angel Suquía Goicoechea, Archbishop of Madrid, Spain, Archbishop Gabriel Zubeir Wako of Khartoum, Sudan, Bishop Pietro Giacomo Nonis of Vicenza, Italy, and Bishop Alvaro del Portillo, titular Bishop of Vita, Prelate of Opus Dei.
